Tooth Extractions Q&A

Why do I need a tooth removed?

While it’s common for many people to need their wisdom teeth removed because they don’t have space to grow properly, there are many other reasons for a tooth extraction.

Excessive tooth decay, tooth infection, and overcrowding are all reasons you may need a tooth removed.

Orthodontia may require pulling one or two teeth for better alignment, and people who are immuno-compromised may need a tooth pulled to keep their mouth healthy and prevent infections. Individuals with bone loss due to gum disease, as well as chipped, cracked, broken, or worn teeth may also need a tooth extraction.

How is a tooth extraction performed?

Tooth extractions are considered either simple or surgical. The type of extraction required depends on if the tooth is visible or impacted.

During a simple extraction, the tooth is visible. You will receive a local anesthetic, which numbs the area around the tooth. Then your dentist uses a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth and forceps to remove it. You will feel pressure during the procedure but no pain.

During a surgical extraction, the tooth is impacted, or underneath the gums. Local anesthesia is applied to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

Your dentist will cut into the gums and may need to cut into the bone around the tooth to remove it.

What is the recovery time for a tooth extraction?

It may take a few days to fully recover from your tooth extraction. During this time, it’s important to follow all of the instructions provided by your dental team to ensure proper healing.

Infinity Dental Group may pack the extraction site with gauze to limit bleeding. That helps to form a blood clot, which is important to the healing process. You also want to apply a cold compress to your cheek outside of the extraction site to limit swelling.

It’s important to rest and relax for the first 24 hours after an extraction. Only eat soft foods, and do not rinse out your mouth or use a straw. Take any medications as prescribed.

If you experience a fever, pain, or pus drainage from the site of the extraction, make an appointment at Infinity Dental Group as soon as possible.
